Japanese N5 Course | Absolute Beginner

Course Description

The Japanese N5 language course focuses on understanding very basic Japanese. Students learn to read and write the fundamental syllabaries and understand simple, routine phrases. The curriculum covers the essential structure needed to satisfy immediate communication needs. The goal is to gain foundational literacy and survival Japanese.

Who This Course Is For?

This Japanese N5 course is for absolute beginners who are taking their first steps into the language. It is the essential level for travelers who want to navigate basic situations in Japan and the foundation for anyone aiming to pass the official JLPT N5 exam. If you are learning Japanese for a fun, cultural hobby, this is your starting point.

Course Goal: Foundational Literacy

Upon completion, you will have mastered all Hiragana and Katakana, recognize about 100 basic Kanji, and be able to understand some basic phrases. You can handle very simple daily conversations and read short, formulaic phrases.

Course Description

The Japanese N4 language course moves beyond survival level to establish a solid elementary foundation. Students learn to read and comprehend short passages on familiar topics and can hold slightly longer, more nuanced conversations. The emphasis is on mastering the plain form (dictionary form) of verbs and expanding the range of daily conversational patterns.

Who This Course Is For?

This N4 course is for students who have completed the N5 level and are ready for the next phase of Japanese grammar. It’s the minimum level required to understand many daily activities and is critical for students planning a short-term stay or homestay in Japan.

Course Goal: Basic Comprehension

You will be able to read short, clear passages on daily topics, understand conversations spoken at a slightly slower-than-natural speed, and express simple requests and wishes. You will master approximately 300 basic Kanji and 1,500 vocabulary words.

This Japanese N3 course is for students who have successfully passed the N4 level and are ready to move into intermediate fluency. It’s often the benchmark for part-time jobs in Japan and significantly enhances your ability to understand native Japanese speakers without strain. It’s the critical step for complex communication.

Course Goal: Independent Usage

You will be able to understand and use Japanese in everyday situations and read moderately difficult passages. You will master approximately 650 Kanji and 3,750 vocabulary words, allowing you to engage in real-time conversations with confidence.

This N2 course is necessary for those planning to enter a Japanese university (as non-degree students) or work in a business environment. It requires dedicated study and is the level where learners must expand their knowledge beyond common conversation to cover abstract and specialized topics.

Course Goal: Broad Comprehension

You will be able to understand news broadcasts and newspaper articles, follow coherent conversations at near-natural speed, and produce coherent texts on various general topics. You will master approximately 1,000 Kanji and 6,000 vocabulary words.

This N1 course is for advanced learners seeking to enter a Japanese graduate school, work in high-level business or government roles, or translate/interpret professionally. It signifies that the student can function effectively and effortlessly in virtually any Japanese-speaking environment.

Course Goal: Near-Native Mastery

You will achieve the ability to understand and use Japanese in a wide range of situations, demonstrating the full comprehension of complex structures and abstract logic. You will master approximately 2,000 Kanji and 10,000 vocabulary words.
